WESTWOOD 2010-2011
Coach Isiah Brown in his fourth year at Westwood has
turned around a program that has not made the state
playoffs since 1986 when they won the gold ball in
Division AAA and were
runner up the year before respectively in 1985. Their first year in
Division A produced a state championship run to the
final four of the TSSAA in Murfreesboro, TN. finishing
24-7 for the year. With four of Westwood starters
returning for another strong basketball campaign
including some strong underclassmen in the mix, the
Longhorns are expected to advance far in postseason
action with gold in the sights. A very strong senior
class led by
Jarvis
Sullivan
(6'3 - 200 lbs.,
rivals #),
David Pledge
(6'1 - 175 lbs.,
rivals #)
whom was Regional
MVP two years in a row has asserted himself as one of the
top scoring guards in the city. Another senior
Zachary
Smith
(6'4
- 180 lbs.,
diamond in the rough)
possesses one of the best outside shots in the city
while his defense has stepped up from last year and will
be crucial in their season success. Overall this team is one of the best outside
shooting teams in the city, from all over the court
respectively.
Senior
Courtney Holt
(6'0 - 175 lbs.,
diamond in the rough)
and junior Montreze Gary
(6'0 - 175 lbs.,
rivals #)
sharp shooting skills and strong drives to the goal with
the decisive pull up jumpers compliment his game
tremendously, he will be an very explosive player to
watch all season long while scoring 32 points in TSSAA
state tournament action last year. Another senior that will
notch major minutes and contribute heavily in the middle
at the same time displaying his all out hustle and
nice jump shot form is senior
Donnie Thomas
(6'5 - 195 lbs.,
diamond in the rough).
This group of young men
round out a solid starting line up
with a solid bench at the same time.
Westwood had another very productive summer in high
school summer leagues at Central, FCA, and University of
Memphis handily. Coach
Brown stated, "this team has to learn how to win
since it's been so long since they have won". Great
angle to look at the situation with getting these kids
confidence up and playing like Memphis basketball
players play. This year a total
different story with Coach Brown setting up a nice and
interesting schedule that includes the MLK, Fayette
Ware Classic, John Overton Christmas Tournament in Nashville
including a date at Division AAA stronghold Dyer County.
Players that will contribute throughout the season are
juniors
Bernard
Hill
(6'6 - 195 lbs.,
diamond in the rough)
and
Devonte
Gary
(5'9 - 155 lbs.,
diamond in the rough)
will contribute respectively.
