MITCHELL 2013-2014

Mitchell 2012 winning Regional

Mitchell coming off a strong two year run with a runner up and final four finish in the TSSAA State Tournament after horrible 2010 and 2011 high     school basketball campaigns to Mitchell standards. The Tigers were Division AA participants the last four years and will contend in Division A postseason respectively this year under third year Coach Fajari Phillips who has brought back the winning tradition to the Southwest Memphis iconic high school. Compiling a 46-17 overall two year record in his first two years after a very successful sting at Ridgeway Middle with 4 straight state tournament appearances that included a state championship in the loop. Last time Mitchell was in Division A was in 2002 and Thaddeus Young was a freshman at Mitchell and the Tigers made the TSSAA State Tournament then accordingly. Still a very young team led a solid junior core group as Coach Phillips states, "Khallil Spencer and Jeremiah Martin both talents will be required to advance in postseason action and have a successful high school season accordingly". A TSSAA State Tournament appearance will not be enough for the Tigers in Division A but some sort of game ball should be in accordance or the season will not be complete.

Freshman year at BTW before transferring to Mitchell

Junior Khalil Spencer (6'5 - 190 lbs., espn  # -) had a good summer circuit season playing for Team Penny. Spencer physical build and versatility to play down low and up top with guards and forwards will be a plus with his ability to play all 5 spots. His good ball handling with good mid range shooting that he can extend when needed in certain situations will provide matchup problems during game time all season long. His play will help determine how they fare during the high school basketball season and also how far they advance in post season action.

Another very solid junior is Jeremiah Martin (6'2 - 175 lbs., espn - #) also had an extremely great summer circuit season with Team Thad 16's. Martin who possesses all the tools to be a very exceptional guard with his extremely great ball handling skills with full court vision at it's best. His long build makes him a tough opponent to defend with the other ball clubs guards giving them havoc all season long. His left hand jump shot makes it also another tough factor to defend with strong slashes to the rim and quick jump shots in his rotation of offensive alternatives.

Junior Kylan Phillips (5'10 - 160 lbs., rivals #) summer circuit season was very productive for Team Thad 16's with his solid play at the guard spot to compliment his great ball handling and solid outside shot. Phillips high basketball IQ of the game is a plus with his high intensity and tough play at all times in game time situations. Another junior is Naba Echols (5'9  - 210 lbs., rivals #) who also posses an high basketball IQ. in the guard position with his great ball handling skills and left hand jump shot as well. Echols is very crafty and wiry at the guard spot position respectively.

Senior Antwon Garrett (6'4 - 190 lbs., rivals #) whom Coach Phillips calls a stat stuffer and glue guy who has a motor that never quits.  Garrett goes for a every lose ball and extra rebound in strong fashion with his solid body frame. Junior Devonte Shipp (6'6 - 205 lbs., rivals #) who has a chance to start in some games with his long and lengthy reach that can rebound the ball in good form.

Mitchell will not participate in any Hall of Fame games but host Hamilton - Number 2 in MemphisHoopers.com preseason poll on November 23, 2013. December 3, 2013 they play Lausanne @ Lausanne in a holiday event.  They participate in a high profile tournament in the Forcht Bank King of the Bluegrass Holiday Tournament in Fairdale, Kentucky December 19-23, 2013. Week before they travel north they host TSSAA state champions from last year who beat Mitchell in a quarterfinal game CPA out of Nashville, Tennessee December 14, 2013. They finish out there extra classics and tournaments with a game against Jackson South Side in the Penny Hardaway Classic at Dyer County January 23, 2013.

Three seniors that will contribute tremendously and receive valuable minutes all season long are Kareem Austin (5'11 - 155 lbs., rivals #) is probably the best shooter from outside and is very streaky. Cortez Wallace (6'3 - 180 lbs., rivals #) is the best defender on the ball club and one of those kids that does whatever you ask of him with the upmost. A diamond in the rough and in the making might be Mike Fofana (6'4 - 190 lbs., rivals #) who does a little bit of everything accordingly.

College Coaches:> Diamond in the Rough Team with legitimate off the radar prospects, (college coaches click here).

Recap 8-25-2005

BY : ANDRE WHITEHEAD OF TENNESSEE PREP HOOPS

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. I think there is a book that starts off that way, but I digress.

The anticipation of the upcoming AAU or summer campaign was alive and kicking all over the country in May of 2005, especially in Memphis.

The expectations seemed enormous, having finished second in the 17 and under nationals last season as 16's the Memphis YOMCA seemed primed for the ultimate run.

Something happened on the way to the gym.

It was apparent the Bluff City faithful were not the only parties interested in getting a piece of the star studded squad.

Adidas wanted to get a foothold in the ever burgeoning Memphis hoop scene and this seemed to be the initial move to start this particular ball
rolling.

So the YOMCA was no longer in the loop and the Memphis Pump-N-Run were officially born.

TTaking a peek at the roster one could not blame Adidas for their bold move. Thaddeus Young, Willie Kemp, Wayne Chism, Pierre Niles and Brandon Powell made up a nucleus that would surely lead Team Memphis to the promised land.

The summer campaign started with a most interesting scenario as the "PNR" lost a game to the Mid-State Ballerz, who ironically had Willie Kemp running the show. This was an illusion that would soon change, as Kemp
shortly thereafter joined the PNR.

With all their ducks in a row, the PNR set out to establish themselves and put a benchmark on the national attention that would follow.

The Real Deal on the Hill, the first major tournament of the summer that coaches could attend. The pundits pined for the impending matchup between Team Memphis and the defending mythical goliath The Indy Spiece Heat. The Heat were led by the consensus top player in the class Greg Oden and numerous other high level prospects who could actually match the
PNR with name recognition.br>
The reputation was established and the aura of the PNR was created as the boys from Memphis soundly defeated the Heat and made a huge cry across the land as the best summer squad in existence.

Another funny thing happened on the way to their future endeavors, nothing.

For some inexplicable reason the PNR did not suit up for any of the Memorial Day festivities and was sparsely seen until the Adidas Super 64 in Atlanta, following the shoe camps.

The aforementioned players participated in various high level exposure camps and the three major shoe camps and kept their names on the tongues of coaches nationwide.

After achieving individual success at these various camps, the boys got back together with the purpose of putting the finishing touches on a grand and final run through the top programs the country had to offer. They added Ridgeway jumping jack Ernest Fields and ECS powerhouse Tim Johnson to the fold and things looked bright.

Once again a funny thing happened on the way to the gym.

The time off and the lack of continuity played havoc on the chemistry of the PNR and they bowed out early in Atlanta.

Heading to Las Vegas for the final big time event of the summer, the PNR seemed poised and ready to achieve. After dominating pool play the lack of chemistry once again reared it's ugly head and some resentment among the players seemed to end this summer campaign on a sour note.

This team had the potential to be one of the best of all time. It is truly unclear what precipitated these events that grounded this team for much of the latter portion of May and June, but it truly had it's effect on their success.

None the less these kids are part of the best class of seniors to dot the Tennessee landscape in many years.

The decision to completely disassociate themselves with the
organization that they grew up playing for in retrospect now seems like a mistake. The YOMCA will continue on with quality younger teams and what to make of the Adidas affiliation with the Bluff City at this juncture is
unclear.
