EAST 2015 - 2016
Coach Rocky
(East)
The Number 1
Marker in this years
MemphisHoopers.com 2015 - 2016 Preseason Poll is
Memphis East
another Memphis City iconic high school that is
rich in Memphis basketball tradition. The
Mustangs reside in 16-AAA, one of the toughest
districts not only in the city but in the
country "Hands Down". that has produced over 60%
of the state titles over the last decade
starting with the undefeated Hamilton 39-0 in
2006. East
made it to the TSSAA
Final Four last year with a extremely young team
and are still very young going into this year's
high school basketball season accordingly.
Second year coach
Rocky Johnson hit the scene
and made serious noise last year as a new
coach on the block and went from unknown to
semifinals in 2015 TSSAA State Tournament in
Murfreesboro, Tennessee. His tenacious play
calling, defensive schemes, right place at the
right time scenarios all season long and No. 1 - the kids
believed in him front Day 1 compadres!!
He will be helped by Memphis iconic legend
Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway and this team will be
a junior junior 800 lb. gorilla this year and a real live 800
lb. gorilla next year.
This is a team that can
be very very special for the next several years
in strong fashion with a great mixture and
recipe in the making for a record breaking stint
in Memphis area high school basketball
historically. From hard nosed tough
veterans in seniors Courtney Carter and Robert
Washington to go along with a phenom freshman in
Chandler Lawson. Some of the toughest sophomores
T.J. Jones and Alex Lomax in the region and are
valuable parts to East as for engine like
material in the sense, "They make it Go"!.
Sophomore
T.J. Moss
(6'4 - 170 lbs., espn
- 2016 - #)
had a great summer circuit season
with
Team Penny
with a lot of potential still on the horizon
with this extraordinary young man.
Moss
play is silky smooth, very nice and fluid in
transition with mesmerizing moves while in
traffic at any speed which give defenses
nightmares. His jump shot is solid from all over
the court and can stop on the drop of dime with
his shot selection meshed with his high
basketball I.Q. and great court vision!
Alex Lomax
(5'10 - 170 lbs., espn
- 2016 - #)
also had a good summer circuit season with his
strong leadership and displaying his overall
super toughness in every aspect of the game.
Lomax
bulky build and solid ball handling skills
translates into strong drives to the goal with
assist,
high on his record at the
right time or can take it all the way. Coach
Johnson states, "he is the heart an soul of the
team!".
Freshman phenom
Chandler Lawson (6'9
- 200 lbs.,
espn - 2017 - #)
already early in his high school basketball
career is following his two older brothers foot
steps and might surpass their talent level as
well according to insiders say so across the
board. A very athletic young man with a very
long reach that will give the other team trouble
after trouble on defense and offense as the
season goes progresses especially going into
postseason action.
Lawson
skill set is off the charts to be at such an
early age and will do nothing but get better as
the season moves along. Senior
Courtney Carter (6'1
- 175 lbs.,
espn - 2017 - #)
is another one of those
super tough Binghampton players that will not
back down from any situation brought before him
on the court.
Carter
is East best defender with a high level of
energy at all times and sets the tone for the
Mustangs also with great leadership skills
displayed in strong fashion.
We have two brothers and let's start with senior
Robert Washington (6'6
- 190 lbs., future150
#)
who will play in the middle
majority of the game with his low post moves that are
getting better everyday as the season moves right along.
His mid range shot around the elbow plus surrounding
areas are solid, runs the floor really good, and his
shot blocking will be a major attributor on defense in
clutch games all season long. The other brother is
sophomore
Ladarius Washington
(6'4 - 190
lbs., rivals
#)
is another
high energy player who plays with a lot of emotion
especially around the rim that turns into garbage
points that are very valuable in the box score.
Washington
has
very quick hands, awesome court vision while running the
floor that gives defenders the blues and he is
considered one of the best defenders not only on the
ball club but in Division 16-AAA respectively.
Memphis East
will not participate in any Hall of Fame,
Classics or tournament games respectively or
it's usual calendar event,
The Martin Luther King Tournament.
December 5, 2015 they will participate in Scales
Lupus Classic at Cordova High School. They finish their
out of district schedule with a game in
The
Penny Hardaway Classic
and will be pitted against TBA.
Junior
Nike Merriweather (5'9
- 150 lbs., future150
#)
who is the son of late Coach Desmond
Merriweather who had many accolades while at
East.
Merriweather
who is a true point guard with lightning quick
speed that is very deceptive, makes great court
decisions in transition and in half court
offensive sets as well and is one of the hardest
workers around "Bottom Line".
Freshman
Malcolm Dandridge (6'8
- 190 lbs., future150
#)
with his super height but has point guard vision
and is ho is new to the Memphis basketball scene
and is slated to make a big impression with his
