November Issue:

Wooddale @ Manassas (Hall of Fame Game)

       Recap 11-20-2010

Wooddale (82) @ Manassas (83)

Playing each other for the second time in 4 days, these two young ball clubs try to gain respect early in the season with Manassas winning on a last second three in the far corner by senior Rodney Smith to avenge an earlier in the week loss to the Cardinals. Wooddale came out the gates roaring as their stingy full court one box press gave the Tigers problems all night long. Manassas senior Brandon Bishop committed 7 turnovers for the game but  this young man handles the ball in a serious facilitator role, more body weight he would be one of the best point guards in the city - great court vision and will lead the Tigers all season long. Wooddale caused the Tigers into many errors in the first quarter to etch out a 19-13 first quarter lead. Wooddale extended their lead to 24-17 then the Tigers went on a 10-2 run to narrow the lead to one at 27-26 with 3:05 left in the first half. Manassas countered Wooddale pressure with some of their own pressure with the Cardinals committing 9 turnovers in the second quarter to take a 6 point lead going into the break at 38-32 Manassas. The first half was full of runs by both ball clubs but turned into a tight contest in the second half. Manassas distributed the ball very well with 9 first half assists with Bishop dishing out double digit assist night with assists for the game. The Tigers led in that department big time  with a 20 to 9 margin over the Cardinals.  Manassas also out rebounded Wooddale 18-16 but the Tigers led with a 11-8 margin in the turnovers department.  Wooddale notched 7 steals in the first half to Manassas 1.

The Tigers started off the third quarter shooting the ball really good to spread their lead to 9 points 47-38 at the 4:31 mark of the third quarter and the highest of the game at 53-40 with 2:31 left in the third quarter. The final 2 minutes of the third quarter the Cardinals started their push of themselves knocking the lead down to 6 points to end the quarter only down 6 points at 62-56. Every time Wooddale made a run the Tigers would respond with one also but the Cardinals stayed within striking range relying on their press to regain the lead that they had in the first quarter. Midway thru the fourth quarter with 3:30 left in the contest the Cardinals got the lead down to 4 points with Manassas calling a timeout. Wooddale pressed finally paid off with the Cardinals regaining their first lead since the 5:40 mark of the second quarter with 49.2 seconds left in the game 79-78 but not able to maintain the lead respectively. Manassas took the lead again with a Dontavious Sears  put back with the Tigers up 80-79. Wooddale sophomore Michael Matlock split a pair of free throws to tie the score at 80 all. Freshman Jerry Johnson hits a pair of free throws to take their last lead of the game 82-80 with 11.2 seconds left in the game. Manassas calls a timeout and sets their play against the stringent Cardinal defense with senior Rodney Smith in the far corner nailing a long last second three to record the victory 83-82.

Manassas junior Dontavious Sears finished the game with a team high 25 points and 6 rebounds in another strong performance. Senior Marvin Jones added 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Sophomore Keonda Howard at 13 points coming off the bench handily.

Wooddale senior Phillip Mays notched a game high 32 points, 3 assists, and 6 steals in the cause. Freshman Jerry Johnson contributed 20 points and 6 rebounds in strong fashion.

Key Points of The Game: Manassas resilience down the stretch and believing in what the coaches were asking for and the hard work over the summer is and will be paying off ten fold.
