Playing
each other for the second time in 4 days, these two young ball clubs
try to gain respect early in the season with
Manassas
winning on a last second three in the far corner by
senior
Rodney Smith
to avenge an earlier in the week loss to the Cardinals.
Wooddale
came out the gates roaring as their stingy full court
one box press gave the Tigers problems all night long.
Manassas senior
Brandon Bishop
committed 7 turnovers for the game but this young
man handles the ball in a serious facilitator role, more
body weight he would be one of the best point guards in
the city - great court vision and will lead the Tigers
all season long.
Wooddale
caused the Tigers into many errors in the first quarter
to etch out a 19-13 first quarter lead.
Wooddale extended their
lead to 24-17 then the Tigers went on a 10-2 run to
narrow the lead to one at 27-26 with 3:05 left in the
first half.
Manassas countered
Wooddale pressure with
some of their own pressure with the Cardinals committing
9 turnovers in the second quarter to take a 6 point lead
going into the break at 38-32
Manassas. The first
half was full of runs by both ball clubs but turned into
a tight contest
in the second half.
Manassas distributed
the ball very well with 9 first half assists with
Bishop
dishing out double digit assist
night with assists for the game. The Tigers led in that
department big time with a 20 to 9 margin over the
Cardinals.
Manassas also out
rebounded
Wooddale 18-16 but the
Tigers led with a 11-8 margin in the turnovers
department.
Wooddale notched 7
steals in the first half to
Manassas 1.
The Tigers started off the third quarter shooting the
ball really good to spread their lead to 9 points 47-38
at the 4:31 mark of the third quarter and the highest of
the game at 53-40 with 2:31 left in the third quarter.
The final 2 minutes of the third quarter the Cardinals
started their push of themselves knocking the lead down
to 6 points to end the quarter only down 6 points at
62-56. Every time
Wooddale
made a run
the Tigers would respond with one also but the Cardinals
stayed within striking range relying on their press to
regain the lead that they had in the first quarter.
Midway thru the fourth quarter with 3:30 left in the
contest the Cardinals got the lead down to 4 points with
Manassas
calling a
timeout.
Wooddale
pressed
finally paid off with the Cardinals regaining their
first lead since the 5:40 mark of the second quarter
with 49.2 seconds left in the game 79-78 but not able to
maintain the lead respectively.
Manassas
took the
lead again with a
Dontavious
Sears
put back with the Tigers up 80-79.
Wooddale
sophomore
Michael Matlock split a pair of free throws to tie the
score at 80 all. Freshman
Jerry
Johnson
hits a pair of free throws to take their last lead of
the game 82-80 with 11.2 seconds left in the game.
Manassas
calls a timeout and sets their play against the
stringent Cardinal defense with senior
Rodney
Smith
in the far corner nailing a long last second three to
record the victory 83-82.
Manassas
junior
Dontavious
Sears
finished the game with a team high 25 points and 6
rebounds in another strong performance. Senior
Marvin
Jones
added 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Sophomore
Keonda Howard
at 13 points coming off the bench handily.
Wooddale
senior
Phillip
Mays
notched a game high 32 points, 3 assists, and 6 steals in the cause.
Freshman
Jerry
Johnson
contributed
20 points and 6 rebounds in strong fashion.
Key Points of The Game:
Manassas resilience down
the stretch and believing in what the coaches were
asking for and the hard work over the summer is and will
be paying off ten fold.
