November Issue:

Westwood @ Germantown (Hall of Fame Game)

       Recap 11-18-2010

#10 Westwood (68) @ Germantown (70)

Germantown in a definite rebuilding mode after losing 10 seniors from last years ball club were very much prepared for this game as 1st year coach Darryle Rogers has the Red Devils gearing for the upcoming season in strong fashion. The game started off very tight on both ends with the score going back and forth with six ties and four lead changes all in the first half.  Germantown ended the first quarter up 20-19 despite being down 5 points to only battle back for the quarter ending lead. Germantown kept the Longhorns off beat the entire game and stayed within striking range waiting for a run of themselves. The Red Devils maintained their solid pressure all during the second half to go into the half up 34-30 with the lead getting no higher than 5 points in the first half. Zach Smith of last years TSSAA tournament participant that made it to the Final Four Westwood had a strong first half on 3-5 from long range to keep the Longhorns in a back and forth contest and minor leads from both sides. Westwood out rebounded the Red Devils with 18-15 margin and both ball clubs committed close turnovers in the first half with the count Germantown at 9 and the Longhorns recording 10 handily. Assists were also close at hand with the Longhorns at  6 to Germantown 5 accordingly.

After both ball clubs battled early in the third quarter, Westwood took the largest lead of the game with 2:51 left in the third quarter up 40-34. The referees had to take control of the game as 2 technicals were called on both teams to quell everyone involved. The lead swelled to 10 points at 47-37 as the Longhorns were unselfish in their overall play during the second half quarter and ended the third quarter with their first quarter lead of the game at 45-37 solidly.  The fourth quarter started off strong for the Longhorns as they seemed to be in cruise control before Germantown forced Westwood into numerous turnovers and bad shot selections to go along with some great outside shooting on their part. Kennedy McKinney caught fire scoring 11 points in .72 seconds to counter the Longhorns with a 16-7 run. Westwood maintained the lead 64-63 before their point guard Tevin Cox  fouled with .64 seconds left in the contest. Germantown tied the game for the eighth time and the most important tie before taking the lead for good and not looking back 65-64 as ball clubs traded baskets and Germantown nailing all their free throws down the stretch to silence the Longhorn come back respectively.

Germantown sophomore Kennedy McKinney finished the game with 22 points, 7 rebounds, and 11-12 from the free throw line in strong fashion. Sophomore teammate Dockie Johnson at 11 points in the cause.

Westwood senior David Pledge notched 13 points and junior Montrez Gary had 13 points also in the contest. Senior Zach Smith at 10 points and 6 rebounds in a supporting role.

Key Points of The Game: Germantown stingy defense in the fourth quarter and never giving up as they believed in their coach to the end of the contest as Westwood watched haplessly.
