December Issue:

       Recap 12-10-2010

Southwind (70) @ Germantown (63)

An early district 15 AAA matchup that Southwind has dominated the last couple of years and an very interesting game with two similar styles of play. Gym was at near capacity as the home team striking first and early as the Red Devils held the lead and had their largest lead of the game by 6 at 16-10. Southwind called timeout and went on a 9-0 run with Southwind ending the first quarter up 19-16. Germantown stayed stuck on 16 for over three minutes of the second quarter before scoring at the 4:32 mark of the second quarter with the Jaguars extending their lead to 9 at 28-19. A game of mini runs on both sides of the ball before Southwind goes on the largest run 10-0 of the game behind some good shooting finally with under a minute left in the first half to go in the half up 42-31 and the Jaguars seem to be taking control of the game. Southwind's poor shooting was tremendously helped by them banging the boards over Germantown in strong fashion with a 22-5 edge in the first half, yeah 22-5 but the Jaguars led with a 7-5 margin in the turnovers department. Another department that help sway the difference in the game was Germantown notched 5 steals in the first half to Southwind 2. Assists department Germantown had a 6-4 lead over the Jaguars and the jaguars had 4 blocks to the Red Devils 1 in the first half stat breakdown.

Second half was a close contest as the Red Devils closed the gap but could never garner the lead from the Jaguars. Germantown got the lead down to 2 points with 3:45 left in the third quarter at 51-49. The play of sophomore Jonathan Williams the brother of George Mason player Johnny Williams whom attended Briarcrest with Leslie McDonald (North Carolina) had a strong performance. Williams had 21 points, 15 rebounds, and 3 blocks and if this young man didn't miss those easy layups down low he would of had 35-40 points but that will come with time as the sophomore showed his skills and will be one of the best big man to come thru the Memphis ranks, reminds me a little of another left handed big man that came thru here and made it big. Southwind depth off the bench was just too much for the out manned Red Devils but they are well coached and will be alright in due time with their new coach at the helm. Another thing of importance is he is left handed and you know how big men left handed do.

Southwind sophomore Jawan Johnson finished the game with 16 points and 5 rebounds in another strong performance. Senior Kedorian Sullivan added 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks accordingly.

Germantown junior Martavious Perkins notched a team high 19 points, 4 steals in a strong performance at the guard position. Senior and high flying Deckie Johnson 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 blocks contributed to go along with senior Terik Hill at 11 points in the cause.

Key Points of The Game: Southwind knocking down every Germantown run they attempted to take the lead which they never could and you know when a team takes the lead  after being down can have major implications and they stood their ground. Also Southwind major dominance on the boards.

Team Rebounds Turnovers Assists Steals Blocks
Southwind 36 10 6 5 5
Germantown 13 12 8 7 2
