MLK Championship Game

Recap 11-28-2009

Melrose (94) @ Sheffield (70)

Sheffield Knights hung with the mighty Wildcats of Melrose for 2 quarters. Even with Memphis signee Chris Crawford picking up his second foul with 3:47 left in the first quarter, the Knights still managed a 5 point advantage at the 2:54 mark left in the first half. Forty seconds left before halftime Melrose regained the lead 26-25 before going into the break up 28-27 as Melrose could not get untracked. Rebounds were about even at the half  with Melrose 15, Sheffield 14. Due to little rebounds in second half as Melrose nailed shot after shot from the perimeter. Difference in the game was Melrose unselfishness as Telvin Wilkerson of Melrose dished out 10 assists before Chris Jones caught fire in the second half finishing with a game high 27 points (13 in 4th), 6 assists, 3 steals, and 4 boards to be named Tournament MVP.

Melrose outscored Sheffield 36-22 to take command of the game in the third quarter and never looked back as Sheffield could never get the lead under 10 points. Sheffield had 5 players in double figures but their bench is undermanned and their starters will notch major minutes the entire season. They go 7 deep and that might be factor in the postseason. Senior Robert Schaeffer led Sheffield players with 16 points and 4 boards. Schaeffer will need to garner double digit rebounds to balance out the front line.

Northern Illinois signee Nate Rucker dominated the middle with 22 points and 6 boards on 9-10 shooting. Monster dunks from Rucker were in showcase form for the sold out Trezevant gym as Memphis head coach Josh Pastner was in attendance. Junior sensation Adonis Thomas finished with 13 points, 5 boards, 2 assists, and 2 blocks accordingly.

Sheffield handled Melrose press quit handily committing only 9 turnovers for the game as Sheffield's Calvin Rounds made some exceptional passes that slid off the Knight players but still ended with 6 assists respectively. Crawford added 5 assists to go along with 12 points.

Key Points of The Game: Anytime a key player picks up 2 fouls in the first quarter it is extremely difficult for him to get into his rhythm for the remainder of the game.

                                       Hamilton (73) vs. Carver (71)

Area News:  The most electrifying game of this MLK tournament so far took place at Carver today. The Blue Wildcats boys basketball team from Hamilton took on the mighty Carver Cobras. Carver kept a steady lead for most of the game and with four minutes left Carlos Denton picked up his 5th personal foul. Hamilton started to play with a since of urgency and Myron Johnson, Jeff Graham, and Mike Farley step up for Hamilton. With the game tied at 71 with 6 seconds to go Myron Johnson went the full length of the floor pass several Carver defenders to make a ten footer as time expired!!! This was the most exciting game of this early season so far and Hamilton is off to a good start this season under new head coach George Parker. Coach Parker has Hamilton playing with that same heart and passion as Coach Lawson did in that state championship season. Myron Johnson lead all scorers with 34pts, Carlos Denton 10pts 14rbds, Jeff Graham 12pts 8rbds, and Mike Farley 7pts 9rbds. Colin Glover lead Carver with 18pts and Reggie Bates finished 16pts. Good look to both team as the season is just starting.

Area News:  The addition of Bobby Parks Jr. definitely boast Melrose for the Pre Season Number 1. A sure slot at Ridgeway earlier in the year has changes to perennial power Melrose. Eligibility will surely be a issue in this case. The TSSAA Board will review the matter in early November and their should be no problems in him being able to play this year. He has followed all the rules in order to be eligible, so we will see shortly. One more thing on this issue, in the short three years Jermaine Johnson has been at the helm of Melrose he has changes the school just as much as any other coach has with star recruitments. Mitchell High School back in 2001 before Coach Jerry Johnson took over is a perfect example.

BTW and Melrose vie for the services of sophomore sensation Martavious Newby who is a solid left hand player that does it all in any game he is involved and can easily take over the game. Todd Mayo to join brother O.J. in Memphis

0122_mayo01

By: GRANT TRAYLOR

By GRANT TRAYLOR

Herald-Dispatch.com

HUNTINGTON — To Todd Mayo, basketball has always been business.

He goes to work every day in a three-piece suit — jersey, shorts, sneakers — and puts in long hours to exceed his goals.

However, now entering his junior year, he wants to learn the business end in more detail from brother O.J., who is now in the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies.

For that reason, Todd has decided to join his family in moving to Germantown, Tenn., a town just 21 miles outside of Memphis. He will play basketball for Houston High School this fall.

“He’s definitely one of the reasons I wanted to move down here,” Mayo said. “He’s taught me a lot this summer. I’m more serious about basketball now.”

Todd said he and O.J. have grown extremely close as the two have worked out together the entire summer.

He learned several things about life as a basketball player from his brother, and said the more he learned, the more he liked what he saw.

Now, he will continue to learn. The difference is he will be within miles of an NBA franchise and one of the top college programs. It all will help him prepare for his future as a basketball player, he said.

“O.J.’s been putting me through a lot of workouts and showing me different things,” Mayo said. “I’m just more focused on what it is that I am about to do.”

Things weren’t always so clear for Todd Mayo this summer.

As the summer was coming to a close, Todd had a decision to make. His family was moving to Germantown and he could either go to Mountain State Academy or move with them.

He said no matter what, due to his family’s move, he would not have been at South Point this year.

“I thought about going to Mountain State, but I didn’t want to leave my family by themselves,” Mayo said. “O.J. is going to be staying closer to downtown with the players, so I wanted to be there with them.”

Mayo said that Houston High School is much like South Point in that it is considered a football school right now. He said he hopes to change that quickly though.

“I’m just going to work out and get better and we are going to see what can happen down here,” Mayo said. “It’s exciting to think about. It’s going to be fun.”

Mayo said that despite the junior year being a big year in the recruiting circles, the recruiting benefits did not factor into the decision because several schools have already offered.

Marshall University coach Donnie Jones was the first to offer Mayo a Division-I scholarship last year.

Playing for the Pointers in his sophomore year, Mayo averaged 22.6 points per game and shot 47 percent from the field. He led South Point to an undefeated regular season at 20-0 and its first Ohio Valley Conference title since 1990.

Manassas had a top 3 recruiting class to return to the state championship game with the additions of Joe Northington and Tevin Cox  to go along with Ole Miss signee and Top 100 Rivals Reginald Buckner. Both top sophomores in the state. Southwind with the addition of Darren Gray from Overton will  make some serious noise and has a strong chance of making a run for district honors. Craigmont and Trezevant will be better than I originally anticipated. Bolton has a nice nucleus led by John Dunavant (2010) but Germantown will be some where in the hunt. Mitchell picked up a great coach but will Madrakus Wade Stay and what players will come to Mitchell immediately, if not it will be a long year. Wooddale is going to have a long year also with the loss of Gray and LeMelvis Davis (Wooddale) will hurt. Hillcrest increased their postseason opportunities enormously with the addition of Davis (Wooddale) and Denero Wash. BTW will have a down year, Carver will make a strong run, will they go farther than the Regionals. Can Central advance further than a first round regional loss? Raleigh Egypt in maybe Coach Adams last year will make a solid run for state honors and have just a good chance as any other AAA Memphis strongholds in White Station and Ridgeway. Sheffield fields a strong starting five and is preseason 16_aa favorites, Westwood will surprise a lot of opponents with senior Dominique Shaw's play . Fairley with Sylvester Ford in over 30 years of coaching will be competitive as year in and year out, plus the transfer of Anderson Cunningham (Cordova) will solidify another strong line up in one of the strongest Districts in the State 16-AAA. Ridgeway again will make a run with eligible Boo Marshall who will make a claim to be one of the top guards not only in the city but the state, Tarik Black (6'8 - 195 lbs.) had a monster summer on the circuit and Cordero Maclin (6'8 - 205 lbs.) White Station will make a lot of headlines in the local paper especially with the prep sports editor a alumni of White Station, can you blame him, NO. Joe Jackson and Farrakhon Hall will lead the way with the younger group very promising in Marvin Williams and Andre Boone. Olive Branch, Ms. Melrose had a top 5 recruiting class and offensive scoring threat Chris Jones had a awesome summer on the circuit to lead an already loaded squad. Hamilton, Northside and East will all have a long year. Kingsbury will surprise many opponents and field some of the top athletes in the city. Cordova and Collierville will need to address their basketball programs with their enormous enrollments and horrible basketball results, Houston with addition of O.J. Mayo's little brother will need more help as football prevails at that school. Memphis Home School Eagles have three really good players on their team that will represent well in the postseason. ECS will be the strongest private school member over early season favorite Briarcrest. CBHS and MUS will not be as strong as teams past, maybe MUS a little bit better.

Coaches said I was crazy to go to Las Vegas, NV. with 7 players and not one of them were ranked in the Top 1000. I adhere to rankings because that is part of what I do in the Memphis area but if you see talent and I call it pieces to a puzzle. 2 big men 6'7 or bigger to ward off the other teams with big men, a point guard that can facilitate and not turn the ball over, a proven scorer like 20 or more a game, a player that has a consistent 8 to 14 points a game and can at times score 20 points or more. Like what a old man told, "a little bit of this and a little bit of that and that is what you get".

Area News: Below is a excerpt of a article from an incident from Hoopers daily summer functions, every year it is a different player with a different story and after a while you seem to hear all reasons of all types. his one

This one really bothers me when you try so hard to help local kids get into school. Like I tell them over and over, scholarships don't fall out of the sky. So when you get to that point don't hesitate especially if you haven't had one period at all. We won't say names but a kid played on the Hoopers team in the Battle on the Bluff and had a great tournament where 4 Division-1 schools were inquiring and two were ready to offer. Just like they were there for two other kids and made their mind up watching them and they were going to offer, it's a process but a quick one at times, especially in July. The following week the Hoopers go to the Nike Main Event in Las Vegas with these now 11 schools (Division-1) looking for this kid from all the promoting the Hoopers staff does for the local kids, phone calling, emailing and of the sort. Not saying all 11 were solid interested but the fact you are in a venue to showcase your talents in front of coaches, D-1 at that. How are they going to know if they don't see you play. Instead this kid goes to New York for a tournament, not even NCAA sanctioned, for older men, a semi-pro type league for some games. Not one Divisio-1 coach in the house. He tells me it was a free trip. Remember everything in life that is free is not good. Please remember that line. I had two players on the team that made the trip and only paid $50.00. That's all they had and that is where  the Hooper staff comes in and takes care of the rest thru sales and traffic from this site. Remember you can go to the gym, community center and play for free and all the time. The parent seems to not care at all or some cheese seems to have slipped off his cracker. I hope those Division-1 schools will come to your high school and watch and see if you are legitimate but that is too late, they all have offered to other kids. It's just now up to the kids to take their offers. Hoopers was trying to get you noticed. Recruiting has definitely changed maybe from the days when the parent was in school. You love it I like it. Every year I have something like this to happen in some shape or form. I tell the kids and parents to go right but they go left and have never been in this situation before. Listening to someone that never even been to school before. The truth is strong and please don't waste the Hoopers time because Hoopers time is just as valuable as anyone else's time. Then the player steals my shorts, what more can I say,. Enroll to read more.

Manassas Reginald Buckner is close to committing and Ole Miss and UTEP are the frontrunners to date. Players of Notice: Chris Crawford  (Memphis Sheffield) - great outside shooter-knows how to find his shot-arms span of a 6'8 man, Marvin Williams (Memphis White Station) strong fundamentally-reminds me of Dwight Stewart-plays the middle with authority and knows how to score and rebound with the best, Darren Gray (Memphis Wooddale) - very athletic and great move to transfer to Wooddale.

White Station prevailed behind Joe Jackson's 40 points in a solid performance. Players of Notice: John Dunavant  (Memphis Bolton) awesome long range shooter, Jordan Husley (Germantown TN.) nice size with good hands, Austin Hollins (Germantown TN.) aggressive around the rim and shoots mid range jumper with ease.

Recap 6-03-2008

Mid State Ballerz (55) @ YOMCA (46)

The Ballerz jumped on the favorite YOMCA in the first couple of minutes of the contest. Commanding a double digit lead and maintaining it for majority of the game, the Ballerz fought off a late rally by the YOMCA in a 55-46 victory for the Ballerz and AAU State Championship honors. YOMCA was without highly touted Leslie McDonald (Briarcrest) due to injury. Coach Schulman had the Ballerz well prepared and coached for this tournament. Turmoil on the YOMCA bench between coaches was a distraction for the players.

The Ballerz were patient on offense for good shots and ran when the opportunity arose. YOMCA was out of sync the first half and shot under 30% for the game. An 18-10 margin for the Ballerz at the end of the first quarter that ballooned to 34-16 at the break. Nathan Parker (Knoxville Bearden) was very consistent with his game high 18 points as 9 points were scored each half accordingly.

YOMCA came out in the third quarter with a strong rally led by Johnny Williams (Briarcrest) monstrous dunk with his left hand coming form the right side of the court. Showed great versatility with that move and ignited YOMCA to get the score under double digits.

The Ballerz Skylar McBee (Rutledge High) thwarted a Y rally with some long three pointers and at the right time to nullify the surge and end up with 14 points. The fourth quarter started off with a dunk from Farrakhon Hall (Memphis White Station) who ended with a team high 11 points for YOMCA respectively. .

C.J. Crittenden (Dyer County) anchored the back court with some decisive ball handling against a stingy YOMCA defense. Ian Clark (Germantown) nailed some nice shots from long range.

Key Points of The Game: The Ballerz patience on offense and shooting over 58% for the game. The Ballerz big men balanced the size difference from the YOMCA and the Y's poor shooting was a hamper.

Area News:  Memphis YOMCA 16's and 17's represented well in the Annual Boo Williams Tournament in Hampton Virginia. Reginald Buckner (Manassas) stepped up in major proportions for the 17's making a nationwide name for himself with some outstanding abilities. Reginald Buckner Breakdown: super quick off the floor, blocks shots with any hand , dribbles above average for a gig man, doesn't force anything, great one on one moves with the other teams big man but finishes strong on either side of the rim. Shots missed off the rim he gets just as good as any 6'9 player in the country with National TV replay authority.  it's not his jumps shot is non existent or not any good, he just doesn't shoot as much as he needs to. That will come in time and when he does he will be totally unstoppable on this any level. Work ethic will have to better and with him being relatively young will change sooner than expected. He is taking the sudden success and attention very well and is taking the leadership/captain position seriously.
