Recap 12-10-2005

Mitchell (95) @ Hamilton (106)                                                              With two of the most exciting games of recent memory in the last year and 'gearing up to be of the same format'. This regular season series has received much hype as a past UM vs. Louisville rivalry. These games draw major attention to a thirsty basketball environment citywide and has been like this since I can remember in my age bracket which runs from Keith Lee's arrival in the early 80's. One thing that brings Memphis together is undeniably basketball and with Bobby Dodd and AAU setting up camp here over 25 years set the infrastructure for a prosperous and competitive atmosphere. The Mitchell Tigers traveled to Hamilton for a much anticipated game circled on everyone's schedule while they fall 106-95 in a sold out Hamilton gym.

An injured Mitchell club with seniors Najule Ervin and Thaddeus Young out for the game due to serious ankle sprains and out 7-10 days. injury came in the Kirby game. On paper and just blind sight the Wildcats of Hamilton were the favorites and maybe a thumping in the works but Florida signee Brandon Powell  had something to say with a game high 33 points (22 at the half), 8 boards and 4 assists in his teammates absence. Speaking to Clark Francis of hoopscooponline in Kentucky at the Hoopfest he stated "that Brandon Powell was ranked to low and needs to be ranked higher", loved his play overall.

Four ties and 2 lead changes in the first 5 minutes of the game was interesting. Tied 14 up at the 3:02 of the 1st, Hamilton went on a 13-4 run to close out the quarter as momentum swayed their way. Leading by 14 at the half 57-43, Hamilton still was in control of the game shooting a solid 50% from the field on (18-36). Mitchell shot 42% on 15-36 in the same span. Good shooting and strong rebounding kept Mitchell in the game as the Mitchell Tigers won another key department on the boards with a 23-13 Mitchell advantage in the first half. Both teams had 17 turnovers.

Second half the Wildcats picked up the pressure and banged the boards with authority as the Wildcats posted 20 second half boards. Five players in double digit scoring for Hamilton was an impressive balanced attack per say. Ingredients for a commanding lead and coasting to victory in the first meeting of the season of two area power houses. With key injuries the Tigers of Mitchell never let the lead get over 17 points and stayed within striking distance as low as 8 94-86 with 2:46 left in the contest.

Hamilton's leading scorer was Colorado signee Jeremy Williams at 31 points and 11 rebounds. Other Hamilton in double digits were San Francisco recruit Jay Watkins added 17 points and 6 rebounds, juniors Devion Hunter at 14 points and Broderick Gilchrist at 13 points plus 8 assists. Senior and a diamond in the rough Paul Hagler contributed 11 points respectively. Junior Myron Strong added 6 steals.

Besides Brandon Powell's' (B.P.) performance playing big boy ball , seniors Michael Cager had 20 points plus 5 steals and Andre Thornton at 10 points and 7 rebounds. Another senior Junile Ervin played aggressive all night as he snatched 12 rebounds displaying his 34' vertical jump to go along with 5 steals.

Key Point  of the Game: Down by 8 and at the line, Mitchell's Manuearl Brewer misses two free throw attempts. Hamilton's Devion Hunter goes down the court fouled and hits both free throws, instead of a 6 point deficit the Wildcats stretch it out to a 10 lead.

Recap 12-13-2005

Fayette Ware (57)  @ Hillcrest (48)                                                     Two highly successful programs in the last 10 years and with many players playing on the next level. Fayette Ware seems to garner another strong competitive team as another excellent strong forward as the likes of recently graduated  Frank Holmes (UAB) and Desmond Yates (MTSU). On the rise is senior MarKeith Wilson (6'5 - 205 lbs.) and averaging over 20 points respectively in the first half of the season with an all around game. Injured in last night game Fayette Ware is still too strong for the Vikings of Hillcrest under a new coach after long time coach Anderson bolts for the University of Colorado with great success under his belt.

A sloppy first half just netted a 5 point lead for the visitors from neighboring Fayette County at 29-24. Hillcrest scrapped their selves back into the contest but fell short 57-48. JeJuan Tucks led Fayette Ware with 13 points. Hillcrest was led in scoring by John Reed at 10 points.

Key Point  of the Game: With the lead  under 7 points, the Vikings shot them selves out of the contest on ill advised shots and bad ball management.

Recap 12-14-2005

Overton (62)  @ Westwood (51)                                                             Off to the best start in many years the Wolves of Overton are poised to make a strong run in District 15 AAA. After years of 'near the bottom' or 'maybe in the middle' of the pack of District 15 AAA the Wolves should contest for district honors and maybe City Championship tones. An junior oriented team with depth as an advantage over most local opponents, second year coach Greg Williams has his troops focused as ever heading into next month district schedule. On the road at Westwood the Wolves triumph 62-51 in a much closer game than the score portrays.

Jumping on Westwood 20-9 after the first quarter, the scrappy Longhorns fought their way back right before the half to go down 28-20. In the second half Westwood scored the first six points off 3's to narrow the lead down to 2 and the closest they would get. Overton maintained a small lead after the Longhorn run behind junior Ron Sampson's 18 points and 5 rebounds. Another junior Derrick Warren contributed 15 points and senior Britton Wakefield added 12 points and 8 boards in the cause.

Westwood was led in scoring by freshman and  diamond in the rough Chris Carr (5'10 - 165 lbs.) 14 points all from long range. Freshman Courtney Bell chipped in 8 pts., Senior Tedrick Payne snatched 14 rebounds in commanding form. Westwood is next year from competing on a strong basis with this young oriented team at veteran coach Harold Johnson's experience.

Key Point  of the Game: Starting the second half, Westwood out the gates hitting 2 3's in the first 90 seconds, respectively the Wolves showed maturity by taking control of the game and handling the pressure on the road.

Recap 12-16-2005

Ridgeway (68)  @ Raleigh Egypt (71)                                                 Neither one of these teams want to meet each other in early action of regional play due to both of noted clubs are at top of their games behind two of the best coaches in Memphis with 5 state championships at hand. When one club would get a sort of a lead the other would make a solid run to get back in the game and this went back and forth throughout the whole game with neither posting a major lead. Finally getting a chance to see some players that I have not really seen in a full game with these game time circumstances and they performed extremely well. Players I am talking about are diamond in the rough sophomores Jason Jones (6'4 - 185 lbs.) and Martino Brock (6'5 - 180 lbs.) from Ridgeway. From Raleigh Egypt another diamond in the rough juniors Derrick Edwards (6'5 - 210 lbs.) and Caleb Brown (6'1 - 185 lbs.).

Raleigh Egypt leading 30-24 at the half as Wesley Channel's 10 first half points pace the Roadrunners. Maurice 'Mo' Miller led Raleigh Egypt at the half with 9 points and 3 assists, senior teammate Maurice Hunter added 8 at the break. A game of short runs from both clubs cultivated into a thriller down the stretch as both ball clubs tried to gain control of the game to end it on their terms. To no avail the game went into overtime tied up at 65 up.

Ridgeway gained it's first lead of the game 55-54 with 4:19 left in the contest on a Jason Jones bucket but Miller of the Pharaohs answers with a 2 of his own. Ridgeway forces 2 quick turnovers and convert them into points for a 4-0 run and a 58-55 Ridgeway lead. The lead changed hands 11 times in the second half as the underclassmen for both clubs stepped up big time. No bigger than a 3 with under 40 seconds left to tie the score up by junior Derrick Edwards of Raleigh Egypt.

Ridgeway had opportunities in overtime with some key steals but missed layups combined with cold shooting changed the flow of the game in Raleigh Egypt's favor as the Pharaohs senior stepped up and scored all the points in the extra quarter to go away a 71-68 victor.

Maurice 'Mo' Miller led Raleigh Egypt with 20 points to go along with 7 assists displaying some solid outside shooting as he defines his game. Junior Derrick Edwards 18 points, 8 boards and 4 assists. Senior Maurice Hunter at 17 points.

Ridgeway senior Wesley Channels at 20 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Sophomore sensation Jason Jones notched 19 points and 7 boards in a remarkable performance. Senior Ernest Fields had a game high 11 rebounds in the cause.

Key Point  of the Game: Leaving big man Derrick Edwards wide open as he nailed a big time three to sway the momentum in Raleigh Egypt favor. Another big 3 from senior Maurice Hunter deep in the corner right before regulation ended.
