Tyrone Wooten of Trezevant is leading the city in scoring at nearly 30 points a contest.
Area News 1-21-12:              Hoopers Top Ten has a new No. 1 in Memphis BTW who are favorites in Division A to win state with veteran head coach Fred Horton at the helm in his 30+ years of coaching. Even though the Warriors schedule is not as tough as other counterparts they are still undefeated and boast a overall strong team that can compete with anybody in the city.
Area News 12-26-11:     Hoopers Top Ten stayed the same pretty much with CBHS and Briarcrest changing spots. Trezevant entering the poll for the first time in Hoopers history since 1999. Ridgeway kept the number 1 slot and teams are very precautious in their scheduling this year.
Area News 12-16-11:               Simeon Career Academy visited Brighton and proved why they are ranked number 1 in the ESPN high school rankings with an solid outing against the Cardinals.
Duwante Thomas of F.A.C.S..
Area News 12-14-11:               Overton upends Craigmont 73-69 and at one time had over a 25 point lead in the second quarter. Craigmont didn't look like a ball club that will advance far in postseason action.
Area News 12-14-11:             Area surprise teams are Trezevant with the leading scorer in the city in Tyrone Wootten, this kid is smooth on offense and hard nose young man. CBHS with Coach Luckett doing what he does every year in and year out. have these young men believe in his system hands down. The purple wave snuck by me this year because the Hoopers staff usually has them on the radar but for whatever reason they are for real.

Area News 12-07-11:              Junior Austin Nichols of Briarcrest is definitely the number 1 player in the city hands down after Stokes will not be playing this school year. Stokes is a McDonalds  All American nominee.

Area News 12-05-11:              Junior Austin Nichols of Briarcrest is definitely the number 1 player in the city hands down after Stokes will not be playing this school year. Stokes is a McDonalds  All American nominee. Southwind and Memphis East  suffer their first losses in the second week of the early season and are 2 & 3 in the most recent Hoopers TopmTen. .

Area News 11-27-11:               MLK Classic Tournament: Memphis East captures title with win over Melrose 73-64. Craigmont earns third place with a lopsided victory 97-51 over Carver and I thought Carver would have one of their better teams in the last several years.
Area News 11-20-11:              Nitty Gritty: As mentioned in article on 9-01-11. TSSAA usually doesn't rule favorable in these hardship cases. They denied his request but options are open as to enrolling into college early. Million dollar question is what school will garner his services. Arkansas, Memphis, UConn, Kentucky, and Tennessee are vying. McDonald All Americans are few and far apart and would be great for the state of Tennessee in basketball terms but others think otherwise.

Craigmont Division AAA TSSAA State Champions with a victory over Bearden to capture the schools first gold ball and will be Hoopers Top Ten Preseason Number 1.

Area News 10-20-11:              Nitty Gritty: With the season just three weeks away with Hall of Fame Games it will be a very balance year with no powerhouses in the works.
Area News 10-09-11:              Nitty Gritty: John Lucas Camp in Louisville, Kentucky was a great camp.
Area News 10-11-11:              Nitty Gritty: MIAA has clamped down this year on illegal transfers city wide. Wooddale a early loser with Alex Anderson returning to Memphis East This will put East definitely back in Top 10. Central will be the early season loser with a drop out of Top Ten if Stokes doesn't return after a preseason Number 2 ranking.
Area News 10-02-11:              Nitty Gritty: Eleven players from Memphis and one from Nashville represented their cities respectively. Players in attendance were Davell Roby, Fattod Lewis, Jalen Lindsey, Ryhne Townes, J.P., Chris Chiozza, Leron Black, Jerry Johnson jr., Martavious Hymon, Tim Sanders, and Tony Myers.
Area News 9-25-11:              Nitty Gritty: This 2011-2012 will have the most balanced group of teams all over the city and county. Definitely no 800 pound gorilla'\s like Melrose and of Mitchell of the early 2000's.

Area News 9-01-11:              Nitty Gritty: Ruling on Stokes is out and everyone is mum. Is that a good sign or a bad sign. Traditionally a bad one but we wait to see and hear due to TSSAA usually doesn't approve these type of hardships. Will he go back to Central and play, where he can with no problems. I seriously doubt it. Then will Craig Hill return. Basketball in Memphis has always been like this, so it shouldn't surprise anyone.  Martavious Newby Memphis BTW enters back into the www.rivals.com 150 at #97. wby
Area News 8-28-11:              Nitty Gritty: Will TSSAA allow Jarnell Stokes to play at Southwind, if not he will still garner all scholarship offers like he didn't skip a beat. Myron Johnson is enrolled at Central where he played all summer with Westwood. When you do wrong it comes back in many different forms compadres, look at the evidence as it slaps the Longhorns in the face. We will leave it at that and one more thing, who looks @^&*(* now!!! I won't mention no names.

Area News 4-17-10:          NITTY GRITTY: Most disappointing team of the high school basketball season is Westwood High School who returned all their starters from last years state bound team who made it to the elite eight plus an addition of an top three guard  whose transfers were very questioned by the MIAA and TSSAA able. Head Coach Isiah Brown condoned an unhealthy environment with outside alumni/boosters whatever you want to call them in Michael Richardson owner of a major clothing store in Memphis giving money, shoes  and clothes to select few. When others on the team didn't receive anything you had parents coming to the school demanding shoes, money and other items. Especially at the end of the season when parents knew their windows were  closing, They were at the high school gym  like  lines at a food stamp office. With major distractions of that proportion it offset the team and they lost the last three games of the season. Also at this point of the signing season none of their 6 seniors have been signed. What two have offers and what other boosters were involved Log into read more.............

Area News 3-01-10:              Cordova I don't know what to say upsets Dyer County in overtime to make a 4 team Memphis try for regional finals going to sub state. Like mentioned before Coach Scales gots to be Coach of the Year in the Hoopers Book.  Dyer County is resembling Mississippi teams that do great during the season but falter at the end. That's why for example like the NCAA Selection Committee they harp on schedules and after you look at Dyer County schedule you say it's too easy which in return comes back to bite you in the behind!! Hillcrest  keeps rolling with win over Kingsbury to meet BTW, them Warriors seem to be there at the end and a good way to go out as the last year playing Division AA The big dogs Melrose and White Station meet in the Regional championship where both teams should meet in Murfreesboro for a rematch from last years TSSAA championship game.
Area News 2-27-10:                Seven Division AAA teams, Two Division AA, and One Division A teams in this weeks Hoopers Top Ten. Another major disappointment team of the season is the Southwind Jaguars who could not find continuity down the stretch. Hillcrest postseason advancement is for real with sub state implications against another upcoming program the falcons of Kingsbury. Coach of the Year candidate is Coach Scales at Cordova and his admirable young men who play hard and very smart compadres!!
Area News 2-24-10:                 Major disappointment team of the season is the Bartlett Panthers losing to Arlington in first round action of district and bad end of the regular season. Southwind seems to be falling apart with 2 consecutive losses to Ridgeway. Northside with 7 players win their district championship game over Kingsbury and surprises everybody. Kirby over Overton was minor but the win over Germantown was a big one. The team playing the best ball right now is the Ridgeway Roadrunners.  Craigmont seems to shake off late season losses to win their third straight district title. Melrose and White Station might repeat as the TSSAA state championship game in Division AAA. Melrose with it's late season surge overtakes as the team at the Number 1 slot the most of this 2011 basketball season. A win tonight at White Station in teh championship game will take them to 5 weeks at the spot and a great time of the year to be at that  position but there is still a lot of basketball in the next two weeks.

Hoopers Top Ten Number 1's   Craigmont two weeks, one week Southwind two weeks, two weeks  Melrose two weeks, two weeks     White Station  one week

Area News 2-07-10:                Nitty Gritty: Don't no area teams want the Number 1 ranking VOLATILE!!!!. as Southwind gets throttled by Ridgeway in return makes a tie for district leader and once again Ridgeway is there. Hoopers staff had them in a rebuilding mode this year but Coach Henning has them in the thick of it again  Craigmont takes Number 1 for the second time this year and how long will they stay Number 1 because this time of the year that can mean the end of the season so very crucial Melrose gets things together with late season push with big wins over Central and White Station in the same week, big time Westwood back in the poll since Week 2 Cordova brief entry was negated with loss to rival Bartlett. Look at the amount of losses from all teams in poll and still ranked, unheard of in previous rankings.       Hoopers Top Ten Number 1's   Craigmont two week, one week  Southwind two weeks, two weeks  Melrose two weeks             White Station  one week
Area News 2-02-10:              BREAKING NEWS:    Trezevant Head Basketball Coach Harold Johnson has been suspended by the TSSAA for the remainder of the season. The school just got over the football fiasco in the state championship game as runner ups.

Area News 1-31-10:                Nitty Gritty: Senior rankings will definitely have a facelift with many multiple risers and fallers in recent poll. Players missing off the senior rankings include, Jarvis Sullivan, Charlie Waters, Jessie Holland, Phillip Mays, Dominique Harris, Denzel Hardy, Brandon Bishop, Diere McElroy.  Senior Rankings Updated click here to name a few. The players with rankings to fall due to injury like John Ingram and a transfer who should of never transferred in Joe Norhtington - went from a school where you were a shoe in for Best of the Preps to non existent. Why leave to follow a dream of please tell me what was the reason, I'm gasping for words. November 10 excerpt for subscribers can read the prediction on this one. Also another factor Hoopers staff takes in is if your high school team is losing that effects your rankings tremendously because if you think you are a hell of a player you should be carrying your team like a winner especially on the high school level. Totally different from college compadres. You will still be considered but at a lower ranking due to athletic ability but you might be a turnover machine, a lot of variables to consider. And again it is just a mere ranking, kids sometimes need an extra year of maturing and that is serious business. JUCO is another year of high school to a sense fro many kids.        .............READ MORE........ ..................

Sad day for Memphis basketball as this young man picks Tennessee and we lose on National TV to Georgetown for the second time in a month. Last time that happened with a player of this caliber from Memphis was Tony Harris going there and remember what happened compadres. Totally different story but the season is definitely in shambles with a Conference USA Tournament the only way to NCAA. I'll be damn!!!!!!
