Area News 3-10-13: Postseason Action: TSSAA State Championship in Murfreesboro, Tennessee at Middle Tennessee State University pits Dyer County against Oak Ridge, Dyer County vs. Hillsboro. Mitchell has a tough first round game against defending state champs CPA.

Kennedy McKinney 6'4 senior leads Germantown over White Station in Regional action. Division 1 player definitely!!!

Area News 3-01-13: Postseason Action: Briarcrest is in TSSAA private school championship game. The Saints are right their at the door!!!!

Area News 2-25-13:                       Postseason Action: Biggest upset of the year goes to White Station losing to Germantown on their home court in first round of Regionals.  Dyer County and Southwind stay alive with solid wins to quiet critics about their postseason advancement in past. Melrose falters with a team total 28 point performance. Is a coaching change in the makings. Ridgeway goes further than last years super stacked team. Sheffield and Mitchell run Division AA from the south side of town. Manassas and Trezevant come up short in Regionals. Yeah but Manassas is a Hoopers Top Ten preseason next year with 9 players coming back.

Area News 2-21-13:                  White Station Leron Black named District 16-AAA MVP.

Area News 2-10-13:                  Dyer County maintains the Number 1 slot in Hoopers Top Top Ten for the second week in a row, third time this year. Will the Choctaws falter like previous postseasons.

Area News 2-09-13:                   City Championship  Action:
Ridgeway defeats Melrose for the second time this year. Mitchell claims 16-AA crown with win over another early season Division AA favorite Trezevant. Watch out for teams like Cordova, Mitchell, and Munford who were not early season picks in postseason action.

MUS David Nelson 6'8 freshman

Area News 2-04-13:                   Ridgeway maintains the Number 1 spot in Hoopers Top Ten.

Area News 1-25-13:             District Action:                     Melrose defeats White Station and Hamilton, can't count those Wildcats out.

District 16-AAA Standings
1. Hamilton (7-3)
2. Melrose (7-3)
3. Whitehaven (6-4)
4.  White Station (6-4)
5. Memphis Central  (3-7)
6. Memphis East (3-7)

Area News 1-19-13:   District Action:  Dyer County lasted only one week at Number 1 in Hoopers Top Ten after a disappointing loss to Munford who was led by UTC signee Jonathan Stark triple double performance with 28 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists in a super strong outing.  Local paper still had Southwind number 1 earlier this week and raved about the Jaguars only losses were against nationally ranked teams  but they lose to Ridgeway. It's a numbers game compadres. You have to tip your hats for a day to the Golden Wildcats for a big boy win and talk about you needed it now.

Area News 1-18-13:             District Action: Memphis Melrose younger group led by sophomore Marlon Hunter at 26 points stepped up big time with a double digit win over Whitehaven.  Hamilton is growing up quick also with a close win on the road over White Station. with Dedric Lawson dropping 41 points! The16-AAA has a four way tie with Hamilton, Melrose, Whitehaven, and White Station all 3-2.

Area News 1-17 -13:               Local News: Memphis Melrose Jemerio Jones out for the season with an knee injury. Wildcats are cursed with major knee injuries to two of their top stars in Markel Crawford (Memphis) and junior Jemerio Jones respectively Crawford played in the Memphis East game last week which ruffled some of the Tigers accordingly. Also while we are talking about the  Tigers, all their 2013 recruits have made the cut for McDonalds All American Game.

Area News 1-16-13:             District Action: Memphis Melrose gets demolished by White Station 81-54 and their 5 year run dominating 16-AAA might be coming to an end. Their is still time but with Jemerio Jones & Markell Crawford of Melrose on the injured list hinders their opportunities. After a strong start Memphis Central with that 2 point loss to Whitehaven two weeks set the stage for the descent and fast. Sheffield  and Mitchell on course for deciding 16-AA with Trezevant and Manassas on the other side. The same for  Ridgeway and Southwind in 15-AAA. BTW and Westwood in Division A will meet in city championship accordingly.

Area News 1-13-13:               Penny Hardaway Hoop Fest: Memphis teams did horrible this year against national teams going 1-5. Hoopers Top Ten will have a new team and for the first time this year at the Number 1 slot Dyer County and how long will the Choctaws hold that spot after only losing 1 game so far this year and yeah maybe not against the best teams but they are winning. I know Southwind only 4 losses have been to nationally ranked teams but will that translate into postseason advancement, Bottomline! On the other hand will not playing a tough schedule hinder, well all questions will be answered in less than 4 weeks. Oh yeah when you lose what happens you usually drop and depends on to who and how bad, you still drop not stay the same or even move up, you still lost.  Whitehaven lost by 2 to CBHS but soundly defeated White Station earlier in the week respectively.

Area News 1-09-13:              Penny Hardaway Hoop Fest:   Hoopers Top Ten Number 6 CBHS upends Whitehaven 57-52 and the Purple Wave are for real compadres.

Area News 1-09-13:                     On Your Mind: That's a good line, Lol. I get a lot of flack for not having certain teams ranked as high. Perfect example Southwind lost two games out of town but are still Number 1 in local newspaper rankings. Also I know the teams they lost to were nationally ranked in national polls in the Top Ten. That's great like the movie Talladega Nights where Will Ferrell says "if your not first you came last". Another one is Melrose losing to two Hoopers Top Ten members in the same week but still ranked highly in same publication and one of the teams Sheffield never in preseason polls respectively. Tell that to the NCAA selection committee, don't whine just go out their and take care of business. Nothing to both ball clubs mentioned but therefore see you in TSSAA State in Murfreesboro, not just a sub state appearance thereof.

Area News 1-09-13:           Number 9 Hamilton stays undefeated at home  with 82-76 victory over visiting Number 2 Melrose Number 1 White Station loses on the road at Whitehaven. A much needed win as the Mustangs upset Number 7 and faltering Memphis Central to stay within one game and afloat in:            16-AAA. Standings below.
White Station Leron Black de-commits to Baylor University on January 2, 2013.

Area News 1-02-13:         Memphis Central  defeats Hamilton handily. White Station  gets one on the road in mighty 16-AAA with a win over Memphis East. White Station Leron Black de-commits to Baylor University.

Area News 12-20-12:       Memphis Central is the surprise team of the year starting the season with a 11-2 clip.

Area News 12-17-12:       Southwind maintains the Hoopers Top Ten Number 1 ranking for the second straight week..The Jaguars were impressive with Payton Hulsey averaging 8 assists a game, Jujuan Johnson at 25 points a game and Jonathan Williams in double double form. Number 3 Sheffield stumps against Trezevant with Tadarius Dailey and Tyrone Wotten notching double doubles in strong fashion.
Area News 12-13-12:           Cordova upsets Hoopers Top Ten Number 2 Ridgeway 59-58. Would you call that an upset when  Cordova  beats another Hoopers Top Ten in Houston by 18 points earlier in the week handily. Coach Scales (2010 Hoopers Coach of the Year) is definitely one of the best overall coaches that produces wins year in and year out with no superstars at hand. Number 5 Whitehaven moves up a spot with a solid win over Mithcell on their home court behind C.J. Anderson 26 points.
White Station Nic Smith
Area News 12-10-12:              White Station Nic Smith has received offerings from Arkansas, Memphis, UCONN, and UMASS to name a few. His knack for scoring and I mean this kid can score with ease, don't forget he is very low in turnovers. He was overlooked this summer playing with M33M Basketball due to playing with heavyweights Austin Nichols and Robert Hubbs. He leads the team in scoring along with Top Ten nationally ranked Leron Black

Area News 12-1-12:               BATTLE OF BORDERS, LITTLE ROCK, ARK.: Memphis teams go 2-3 Saturday. Lausanne wins over McCellan 72-59 behind Cameron Payne's 18 points. Olive Branch falls to Jacksonville, Ark 75-61 despite Sam Craft's 28 points.  Parkview squeaks out a victory over Hamilton 81-80 in an up and down affair. White Station stops Little Rock Halls 59-53 behind scoring sophomore sensation Nic Smith at 26 points in strong fashion.
Area News 11-30-12:       MARSHALL COUNTY HOOP FEST: Memphis East falls 76-59 to Huntington Prep, West Virginia.
Area News 11-28-12:                AREA ROUNDUP:   Ridgeway upends White Station in not really an upset. Whitehaven after a slow start throttles Douglass 86-45 behind Aston Morton at 18 points and 11 rebounds. C.J. Anderson led all scorers with 21 points.  Sheffield destroys BTW 80-55 behind Toderick Davis 23 points. 2 players were at 19 apiece with Broderick Davis adding 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals. Jaylon Smith also added 8 rebounds, 3 steals, and 3 blocks. Zamarlus Griffin for BTW had 29 points in the cause.

Area News 11-21-12:               AREA ROUNDUP: The first week of high school basketball brings in early season upsets in local tournaments. No.5 Sheffield  loses to upcoming Houston. Houston is 4-0 for first time in school history with a solid win over No.9 Dyer County. No.4 Melrose blows out No.10 Trezevant  Watch out for Munford who will replace Arlington as the sleeper as they go 3-0. Briarcrest Austin Nichols scores a career high 40 points in victory over hapless Bartlett. Last year state contender Brighton who lost three major players and would of been a Top 5 state team loses to Collierville, yes Collierville! It's going to be along year for the Cardinals.
Area News 11-06-12:                     C.J. Anderson (Arlington) transfers to Whitehaven and makes them a Top Ten contender not only in the city but a top 3 in the toughest district in the state (16AAA). Mitchell no longer a sleeper, rebuilding mode, whatever you want to call it. Picks up another top quality transfer, this time from what school casualty ???. When you are for real it goes a long way. BOTTOMLINE! It is what it is!

Area News 8-04-12:                          One of the last original Hoopers Dontavious Sears (Manassas) from that 7th grade class to his 12th grade year has committed to TSU. That is what happens when you stick with it and believe in your coaches and mostly yourself.
Area News 8-01-12:                   With Memphis City Schools back in session Monday August 6, 2012. What schools are going to be the winners and what schools are going to be the losers in the open enrollment basketball sweepstakes.  Hoopers staff had Melrose in the No.1 slot boasting one of the deepest teams in recent memory. How injuries and transfers can make a good summer disappear so fast. For example like Westwood last year whom didn't lose a game during summer events at major college camps but when the season started didn't one kid on the summer squad actually enroll at Westwood, also for the record Coach Isiah Brown will retain the head coaching position at Westwood and not Cheyenne Gibson as earlier mentioned in certain articles. With Melrose Markell Crawford out the for the season with a ACL injury and Josh Jones going to ???, Demetrius Dyson going to Covington and a great choice for that young man. Mike Matlack going to Central  or maybe to the county. First year coach Ricardo Patton formerly of Northern Illinois and Colorado respectively might coup some of these undecided young men.  Check back for more of the who's who and who's Where and Follow on twitter @MemphisHoopers......
